Tutus mingle with flamenco costumes on the capital’s stages. The ballet in Madrid has the support and public momentum of the Ballet Nacional de España, which ensures a place in spaces like the Teatros del Canal, and adds to the offer the recent creation of the Ballet Español de la Comunidad de Madrid. Meanwhile, at the Teatro Real, international companies present their new proposals for the season, revisiting classics.
Teatro Real
The Teatro Real’s programming changes every season, but ballet always has a place on the agenda. In October the most classical ballet will be part of its autumn proposal, Swan Lake returns to the opera of Madrid. This new performance will be in charge of the San Francisco Ballet, which since 2022 is under the artistic direction of the Spanish Tamara Rojo.
This will be the debut in Spain of the choreographer from Madrid as director of the company. The choreography of Icelandic Heigl Tomasson, inspired by the original by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, putting the focus on the character of Odette.

Teatros del Canal
The Ballet Español de la Comunidad de Madrid will perform for the first time on October 12 at the Teatros del Canal, with additional performances through October 27. The program includes two pieces: Suite Española by Isaac Albéniz, choreographed in its original order and accompanied by the Joven Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid, and Epifanía de lo flamenco, with original music by Juan Requena and choreography by Eduardo Martínez and Arancha Carmona.

Teatro de la Zarzuela

Both the Compañía Nacional de Danza and the Ballet Nacional de España are based at the Teatro de la Zarzuela, so ballet is part of their program every year. In addition, this season, under the direction of Isamay Benavente, its offerings in dance has doubled.
The National Dance Company will reprise the successful La Sylphide, while the National Ballet of Spain will present Afanador, a work inspired by photographs on Andalusia and flamenco by Colombian Ruven Afanador, under the direction of choreographer Marcos Morau.
The theater will also hostNocturna, a collaboration between choreographer Rafaela Carrasco and playwright Álvaro Tato, and Comedia sin título, a work of research and creation led by Úrsula López that explores the unfinished work of Federico García Lorca. These productions reflect the theater’s commitment to diversity and innovation in the field of dance.

Red de Teatros de la Comunidad de Madrid
The Red de Teatros de la Comunidad de Madrid offers a diverse and dance-rich programming, including some iconic ballet works. Facing the most festive time of the year, its productions will focus on the theme with works such as Gran Suite de Navidad, featuring iconic acts from The Nutcracker, La Bella Durmiente and El Lago de los cisnes, performed by the Ballet Clásico de Cuba under the direction of Laura Alonso. The show will tour during December the auditoriums of Getafe (Dec. 8), San Sebastián de los Reyes (Dec. 18) and Fuenlabrada (Dec. 21).
