1. Atlético de Madrid first played here in 1996.
Despite having been inaugurated as Club Atlético de Madrid’s stadium in 2017, two decades earlier it hosted the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup that pitted the red-and-whites against FC Barcelona. At that time it was called Estadio de la Comunidad de Madrid, later baptized as Estadio de la Peineta.
2. Its name refers to the team’s old stadium.
While ‘Cívitas’ alludes to the corporate club that has become Sustainability’s new main sponsor, ‘Metropolitano’ recalls the name of its former stadium Stadium Metropolitano, where Atlético de Madrid played from 1923 to 1966.
3. It has a record-breaking flag in Spain.
The flag that flies to the southwest of the stadium and pays homage to the red and white fans is the largest flag hoisted in Spain. 4. There is a Walk of Legends in the vicinity.
It consists of a walkway of stainless steel plaques commemorating players who have played 100 or more games for the club. The name of the player and the number of games and seasons with their respective years appear on the plaques.
