One could say that it is to Naples what Casa Labra or Sobrino de Botín (or other businesses with a centennial profile) is to Madrid. L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele already gives clues in its name as to what it stands for: it is a Neapolitan institution – it was founded by the Condurro family in 1870 – and… a pizzeria.
And if you have been to Naples at some point, you will have noticed it when passing in front of the pizzeria. The queues that form in front of da Michele are proof that it is one of the great pizzerias in Naples and, therefore, in the world.
And now they will arrive in Madrid. Specifically to the neighborhood of Salamanca and more specifically to 42 Jorge Juan Street -on the door of the business there is now an image of Julia Roberts eating pizza. The expected opening date is next month: September 2024.
The photo of Julia Roberts is neither trivial nor a cliché. Although if it is a cliché, it is a private and copyrighted cliché. It was at L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele where the legendary dinner in which the American actress enjoys a pizza in Come, Pray, Love was filmed.
Da Michele’s pizzas are, of course, Neapolitan. And although they have more types and a variety of antipasti, what stands out from the menu are two pizzas: the marinara (tomato, oil, oregano and garlic) and the margherita (tomato, oil, mozzarella and basil).
A Barcelona experience
L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele opened in Barcelona in 2017 his first foray into Spain. The plan to open in Madrid was already known at that time, as reported by Restoration News-But we have had to wait seven years to see it come to fruition.
This is also the time that has allowed the pizzeria to become one of the best pizzerias in Barcelona for our colleagues at Barcelona Secreta the city is celebrating the fact that one of the great pizzerias of the world has a branch in its city. And now it is also in Madrid.
