Last year was the 100th anniversary of the birth of Chillida, one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century. His signature is behind monuments located in well-known landscapes, such as the Cerro de Santa Catalina (Gijón), where he planted The Praise of the Horizon, or La Concha Beach (San Sebastián), whose rocks hide his famous Wind Comb.
The Alcobendas Art Center (Mariano Sebastián Izuel St., 9) pays tribute to the artist with the exhibition Chillida. Poesía es construcción, which explores his work from a philosophical approach. Thanks to the support of the Telefonica Collection, the ICO Foundation, the Elvira Gonzalez Gallery, the Bank of Spain Collection and, above all, the Chillida Leku Museum, it has gathered 115 pieces by the Basque creator: 46 sculptures, 28 drawings, 10 books and 31 gravitations.
The exhibition seeks to bring Chillida ‘s work to new audiences by taking a journey from the 1950s, when the artist began to experiment with the use of iron as a sculptural material, to his latest alabaster pieces (such as Lo profundo es el aire XV, his Tindaya project).
According to the artist himself, “what all the arts have in common is that they are obliged to present two components: there needs to be some poetry and a dose of construction.” For this reason, throughout the exhibition, the exhibition invites us to reflect on the union of these two elements.
The exhibition can be seen during the museum’s regular opening hours: from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on Sunday and from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm the rest of the week (except on holidays, when the center is closed).
