Although the vermouth and the Rastro seem to be the kings among the Sunday plans, there are proposals that remind us that the range of possibilities is much wider and that these can also be, incidentally, more original. This is the case of Cañas y Tren, an initiative of the Association of Friends of the Madrid Railway (AAFM) in collaboration with ALSA that proposes a trip on board a historic train that ends with a beer and a tapa in a restaurant in the Sierra de Guadarrama.
This original getaway, which according to the association has enjoyed an excellent reception in previous years, will depart from Madrid next Sunday, September 15 and will have as destination Santa María de la Alameda.
Once there, travelers will be able to have a drink with a tapa -whose price is included in the ticket price- at the restaurant El Pato.
What is the trip like
As explained by the AAFM, it will start at Chamartin station at 9:58h, picking up passengers at the stations of Pitis and Villalba de Guadarrama. As for the route, it will run along the “Imperial” Madrid-Hendaye line, so that passengers will see landscapes such as El Pardo, the Cuenca Alta del Manzanares Regional Park, El Escorial… And the slopes of the Sierra de Guadarrama until you reach your destination. The return will take place around 13h.
As coffee for cafeteros: the train is formed by the cars of the “Tren de los Ochenta“. Initiatives like this account for the philosophy by which the AAFM is governed: “For more than 25 years, we have been preserving and restoring historic trains to make trips with them and thus put them in value to society“, Gonzalo Vázquez Hidalgo, member no. 1673 of the association, explains to us.
