Centennials are extraordinary occasions that are consequently often accompanied by equally extraordinary celebrations. These can take different forms, such as opening spaces to the public that are not normally accessible, as is the case with Banca March, which will open its garden at its Madrid headquarters while hosting an exhibition of giant sculptures.
The venue, located at 75 Castelló Street, will host the exhibition “Thomas Houseago. Sculptures. Banca March Garden, ” the first exhibition in our country dedicated to this British sculptor, who was born in Leeds in 1972.
The exhibition will consist of seven monumental sculptures—one of them nearly five meters tall—created from various materials such as plaster, bronze, and aluminum, combined with others like iron rods and hemp: “I try to capture my thoughts and energy in an inert material and endow it with truth and form, and I believe there is nothing more profound than achieving that,” says the artist.
His works blend the heritage of art history with that of popular culture, giving rise to unexpected intersections between classical and 20th-century sculpture featuring characters such as David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust or George Lucas’s Darth Vader.
Dates of the giant sculpture exhibition
The exhibition is free and will be open to the public from May 1 through October 30, 2026. The garden, meanwhile, covers an area of 1,600 square meters, dotted with dense vegetation, several ponds, and other sculptures by contemporary artists such as Cristina Iglesias.
