San Isidro was born in the capital around the year 1080, long before the city was baptized as Madrid. He dedicated his life to work as a farmer on the farm of the important Vargas family, noted for his piety and generosity to the poorest. He is currently the patron saint of the people of Madrid and -before the pilgrimages in his honor begin- every year the Centro district prepares a procession of the saint and his wife, Santa María de la Cabeza.
As is now tradition, the Pontifical and Royal Sacramental Archconfraternity of San Pedro, San Andrés and San Isidro will be in charge of organizing the procession in 2025. The patron saint will walk on May 15, from 7:00 pm, through the heart of the city: it will start at the Royal Collegiate Church of San Isidro and will pass through Toledo Street, Plaza Mayor and, of course, the Almudena Cathedral (where the saint’s chest is kept).
