After 15 years, Tapapiés, the tapas and music festival in Lavapiés, will not be held in 2026. This was confirmed by the Lavapiés District 12 Merchants Association, the event’s organizer, in a statement published on its website.
The decision comes after complaints from local residents regarding the event, which have grown louder in recent years and relate to issues such as overcrowding in an already congested area, noise, and litter.
The announcement that Tapapiés is canceling this year’s edition is accompanied by another: the search for“a sustainable format that does not disrupt coexistence with residents and satisfies both them and the restaurant and retail business owners,” in the words of the association’s president, Carmen Gordo.
A full stop (and a new chapter?) in the history of Tapapiés

Organizers and participating restaurant and bar owners hope this hiatus will be only a temporary pause in the event’s history until a more sustainable format can be developed, as it has brought together thousands of people around the neighborhood’s bars and restaurants during the second half of October for more than a decade.
A positive development for the hospitality industry—some establishments saw sales rise by up to 75%, according to the association’s data—but one that is incompatible with residents’ peace and quiet or, at times, with simply walking through some of the neighborhood’s streets.
The Lavapiés District 12 Merchants Association has stated that “they want to continue counting on the collaboration of the Madrid City Council and neighborhood residents to create a more sustainable Tapapiés, ”according to a statement by its vice president, Marta García Domínguez.
