Getting out into nature doesn’t have to be a challenge for experts: Madrid is full of simple, short and accessible hiking routes, ideal for those who are not used to walking in the countryside or simply looking for a quiet plan with the family. These three routes, all less than an hour long, are perfect to enjoy with children, seniors or groups of friends who just want to disconnect and breathe fresh air without complications.
1. Canencia Ecological Trail
In the Puerto de Canencia, less than an hour from Madrid, is one of the easiest and most beautiful trails in the Sierra Norte. The ecological trail of Canencia is a circular route of just 2.5 km ( about 45 minutes) with hardly any elevation gain, which passes through forests of pine, birch and holly trees, and follows the course of small streams. There are picnic areas, fountains and information panels on the flora and fauna, making it an ideal option for families with small children. Access is easy and the setting, especially in spring and autumn, is spectacular.
2. Finnish Forest
In Rascafría there is a short, simple and very picturesque route. An ideal walk to enjoy with the family: the route between the Monastery of El Paular and the Finnish Forest. It is an easy itinerary, practically flat and suitable for all ages.
Start the route in the parking lot of the Monastery of Santa Maria de El Paular, an architectural jewel of the fourteenth century that deserves a guided tour to discover its church, cloister and courtyards. After the visit, cross the Puente del Perdón, a historic stone bridge over the Lozoya River, located right next to the monastery.
Just after crossing the bridge, on the left hand side, you will see an iron gate: this is the beginning of the path to the Finnish Forest. In just five or ten minutes of walking along a dirt road between birch, poplar and fir trees, you will reach the small lake in the forest, with its wooden pier and a very photogenic cabin. This setting is reminiscent of Scandinavian landscapes and changes color with each season.
3. Schmidt Trail (initial section)
The Schmidt Trail is one of the classic routes in the Sierra de Guadarrama, but its first section, from the Puerto de Navacerrada to the viewpoints, is very simple and suitable for everyone, except in winter. It is less than 3 km (round trip), with little slope and a well marked trail through wild pines. The route can be done in less than an hour and has spectacular views, and there is the possibility of seeing squirrels and birds. It is a perfect option for families who want to start hiking.
