On September 5, Leganés will cease to be just the home of CD Leganés and, for one day, become the first stop on the map of a competition that travels across Europe over four weeks and through four cities. Six clubs, six worlds
Ultimate Sevens already has its first big names: the “marquee players,” the competition’s highest contract category, reserved for players who not only decide games but also shape the tournament from within through their personality or career achievements.
Among the sixteen players confirmed for this first season are names that anyone who follows international sevens will recognize instantly: Abbie Brown, Maddi Levi, Stephen Tomasin, Thalia Costa, Henry Hutchison, Krissy Scurfield, among others. And there’s one who feels especially close to home: Manu Moreno, captain of the Spanish national rugby sevens team—one of the players we’re most excited to see up close at Butarque on September 5.
Leganés: the city kicking off the Ultimate Sevens schedule
Butarque, with a capacity of more than 12,000 spectators, is preparing to host a format of this sport it has never seen before. Being the venue that kicks off the season is no small matter; it sets the pace for the three that follow.
After Madrid, the competition continues across Europe: Cardiff hosts the second stop on September 12, Biarritz the third on the 18th, and London closes out the schedule with the grand final on September 24 at the Gtech Community Stadium. Four cities, one format.
