We are in Madrid 2025, but it feels like New Orleans 1920. Long coat and short brimmed hat. The lights are dim and warm, a trumpet starts playing that Ella Fitzgerald song, and the atmosphere is charged with stories you didn’t remember living. Jazz, that language that everyone understands and that now you can continue to feel in the new dates that We call it Jazz has added in Madrid.
A journey back in time to the soul of creativity and rhythm that can be experienced on selected dates during the coming months and that finds its ideal setting in the iconic Nuevo Café Berlin. Legendary songs such as Sing Sing Sing by Louis Prima, Summertime by Billie Holiday or Ain’t Misbehavin’ by Fats Waller will provide the live soundtrack to an evening in which, for one night, vinyl will become reality. Seating is limited, so be sure to reserve your tickets before they sell out!
What is “We call it Jazz”?
We call it Jazz is a show that goes beyond a live concert: it‘s a chance to live in 1920s New Orleans for an hour. Have a drink in an idyllic location while listening to the sound of trumpet and piano, and feel that life is a little more arranged than before you walked in.
From classics of the genre such as On The Sunny Side Of The Street by Louis Armstrong, to more modern ones including Fly Me To The Moon by Frank Sinatra or All Of Me by Ella Fitzgerald. An experience that leaves room, as it could not be otherwise, to improvisation in songs like Cantaloupe Island.
Jazz, its origins and the show
To find the roots of jazz, we have to travel to Louisiana in the early twentieth century. The streets of New Orleans sound like Blues and Ragtime, and the influence of the African-American communities mixes the more traditional sounds of African and European music with Caribbean music and creates something totally new, jazz. With catchy rhythms and the ability to improvise sounds in each performance, this genre creates a form of expression for the musicians, and an escape for the audience.
A way of understanding (and listening to) life that reached other states like New York or Chicago, and that now make jazz a universal language that is also spoken in Madrid, and that is possible to feel in We call it Jazz. The trumpet, the voice, the saxophone or the piano become the messengers of a unique dialogue between the public and the musicians where no two shows are the same, neither in notes nor in feeling.
From the creators of We call it Tango and We call it A Cappella, Madrid is once again the protagonist of the live music scene with We call it Jazz, where the best musicians and vocalists take the audience on a journey through the classics and the most modern themes of this genre.
An experience that can be lived at Nuevo Café Berlin in two different passes: at 19:00 and 21:00. Access will be available 30 minutes before the start of the show, and seats will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, within the area selected when purchasing tickets. Relax in this urban atmosphere full of warm lights and order a drink before the first notes sound, because once the show starts you probably won’t be able to stop watching.
Experience the essence of New Orleans from Madrid and let yourself be carried away by the freedom, rhythm and passion of iconic songs by Billie Holiday, Chet Baker or Louis Prima.
