Jazz is the language that everyone understands, no matter what country you come from. Louis Armstrong called it “my whole life”, Miles Davis called it “the big brother of the revolution”. And in Madrid, we call it We call it Jazz. A time machine that sounds like vinyl, stories you didn’t remember living, and walking through the wet streets of New Orleans with a long coat and a song stuck in your head.
Unpredictable rhythms that make each concert of We Call it Jazz a unique experience, and now it has arrived in Madrid, at the iconic Nuevo Café Berlin. Do you want to follow the rhythm of mythical songs like “When The Saints Go Marching In” by Louis Armstrong and leave humming others like “Georgia On My Mind” by Preservation Hall Jazz Band? Seating is limited, so be sure to get your tickets before they sell out!
What is “We call it Jazz”?
We call it Jazz is a show that goes beyond a live concert: it ‘s a chance to live in 1920’s New Orleans for an hour. Have a drink in an idyllic location while listening to the sound of trumpet and piano, and feel that life is a little bit more arranged than before you walked in.
From classics of the genre like Louis Prima’s “Sing Sing Sing” or Louis Armstrong’s “On The Sunny Side Of The Street”, to more modern ones including Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me To The Moon” or Ella Fitzgerald’s “All Of Me”. An experience that leaves room, of course, for improvisation in songs like “Cantaloupe Island”.
Jazz, its origins and the show
To find the roots of jazz, we have to travel to Louisiana at the beginning of the 20th century. The streets of New Orleans sound like Blues and Ragtime, and the influence of the African-American communities mixes the more traditional sounds of African and European music with Caribbean music and creates something totally new, jazz. With catchy rhythms and the ability to improvise sounds in each performance, this genre creates a form of expression for the musicians, and an escape for the audience.
A way of understanding (and listening to) life that reached other states like New York or Chicago, and that now make jazz a universal language that is also spoken in Madrid, and that is possible to feel in We call it Jazz. The trumpet, the voice, the saxophone or the piano become the messengers of a unique dialogue between the audience and the musicians where no two shows are the same, neither in notes nor in feeling.
From the creators of We call it Ballet, We call it Tango and We call it A Capella, Madrid is once again the protagonist of the live music scene with We call it Jazz, where the best musicians and vocalists take the audience on a journey through the classics and the most modern themes of this genre.
An experience that can be lived at Nuevo Café Berlin in two different passes: at 19:00 and 21:00. Access will be available 30 minutes before the start of the show, and seats will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, within the area selected when purchasing tickets. Relax in this urban environment full of warm lights and order a drink before the first notes sound, because once the show starts you probably won’t be able to stop watching.
Experience the essence of New Orleans from Madrid and let yourself be carried away by the freedom, rhythm and passion of iconic songs by Billie Holiday, Chet Baker or Louis Prima.
