The 2027 work calendar brings a change that will be met with little enthusiasm by those who usually take advantage of the first days of May to take a short getaway: May 2 will fall on a Sunday and will not be moved to Monday, May 3. The date retains its status as a holiday for the Community of Madrid, but it is not included among the twelve public holidays approved by the regional government. Therefore, the regional holiday itself is not being eliminated, but rather the opportunity to enjoy an additional day off from work because of it. This is set forth in Decree 82/2026, published on October 1 in the Official Gazette of the Community of Madrid.
In addition, May 1, Labor Day, will fall on a Saturday. The fact that both dates coincide with the weekend means that those who work Monday through Friday will not have the usual long weekend in May. This does not mean that the region has fewer holidays in the official count: the calendar retains twelve common holidays, to which each municipality adds two local holidays, for a total of fourteen.
Other holidays in 2027

On the other hand, there will be other opportunities to string together days off. St. Joseph’s Day, on Friday, March 19, will allow those who have the weekend off to enjoy three consecutive days off; shortly thereafter comes Holy Week, with Holy Thursday on March 25 and Good Friday on March 26. The following days will also be holidays: Monday, August 16, for the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin; Monday, November 1, All Saints’ Day; and Monday, December 6, Constitution Day.
Another opportunity to plan a getaway will come with the December long weekend: Constitution Day falls on a Monday, and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, on December 8, falls on a Wednesday. Those who work Monday through Friday and can take Tuesday, the 7th, off will have five consecutive days off, from Saturday, the 4th, through Wednesday, the 8th, using just one day of vacation. It will also be possible to string together four days off in October if Monday, the 11th, is taken as a day off, since the National Holiday, October 12, will be celebrated on a Tuesday. Neither of these two intervening days will be a holiday in and of itself.
