The Community of Madrid is preparing for a sudden change in weather that will put an end to the stifling heat and give way to substantially cooler conditions. According to forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the region will experience a drop in maximum temperatures of nearly ten degrees within 24 to 48 hours—a temperature shift caused by the arrival of a much colder and more humid Atlantic air mass that will displace the warm and unstable subtropical air mass currently settled over the central part of the peninsula.
This change in conditions will break the pattern of temperatures approaching or exceeding 38°C–40°C in the capital and the southern part of the region. By the weekend, high temperatures in the metropolitan area are expected to remain around 26°C to 28°C, offering significant relief to Madrid residents.
The end of tropical nights
This gradual drop in temperatures will also be reflected in nighttime readings: the lows will provide a respite from the tropical nights, falling below 18 °C and making it easier to sleep indoors.
Along with the temperature drop, the AEMET warns that the clash between the incoming cool air mass and the previously accumulated heat will trigger episodes of instability in the form of storms and downpours in various parts of the Madrid region, which will be particularly intense in the Sierra de Guadarrama area and the Henares River basin. Civil protection authorities recommend monitoring official forecasts to adjust plans for outdoor activities in light of possible warnings for strong gusts of wind or heavy precipitation.
