An imposing black structure nearly 20 meters tall has been installed in front of the Palacio de Cibeles. Named “Panóptico,” this piece alters the usual appearance of the area and offers residents an unusual way to view the monumental surroundings. For now, all that is known is that it is black, but it will be unveiled on Tuesday, October 20, at 12 p.m., and we will see its exterior.
The installation is the work of urban artist SpY and functions through direct interaction with passersby. Through a series of holes distributed across the surface of the structure, the work allows viewers to look through it and discover different perspectives of Plaza de Cibeles and its surroundings.
The creator behind this installation is already known for other large-scale projects in the city. In 2017, SpY was responsible for completely covering the pavement of Madrid’s Plaza Mayor with grass.
On this occasion, his new project is part of the “Madrid es Paisaje” initiative, a cultural program that features installations at various locations throughout the city.
Opening Hours and Dates
Access to interact with the installation is completely free, although its presence on public streets will be very brief. The structure will only be open to visitors for five days, from October 20 through 24, between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
