Following the completion of construction work over the past few months, Adif has announced the opening of the new large-scale parking facility next to the Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes station. The new facility consists of two separate modules (P3A and P3B) managed by the company Saba, with a total capacity of 1,357 vehicles, as well as 60 charging stations for electric vehicles.
According to data provided by Adif in a press release, the parking facilities at the Atocha rail complex record approximately 57,000 vehicle movements per month. Following the opening of the new parking garage, the number of parking spaces at Atocha Station has reached 1,907. It is thus expected that travelers arriving at the station by car will have a better chance of finding a space and that traffic within the station will flow more smoothly.
This expansion was also intended to compensate for the loss of parking spaces caused by the construction work currently underway at the Atocha railway complex. Furthermore, the project is characterized by its modular construction, which is based on prefabricated metal elements assembled without welding and easily disassembled for reuse.
Another of Adif’s objectives has been to incorporate sustainable measures into the facilities. These range from providing electric charging stations for users to installing a roof covered with photovoltaic panels. The new parking garage also features a parking space guidance system, passenger information, digitized access and parking management systems, and new pedestrian and vehicular entrances.
Its construction represented an investment of more than 26 million euros and was financed by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU funds through the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan.
The new layout of the Atocha parking garage
The parking facility has four main entry and exit points. Two of them connect to the vehicular access ramp from Ciudad de Barcelona Avenue, and the other two connect to Antonio Nebrija Street. Parking spaces are divided into five categories based on the duration of stays and user needs:
- P1 Premium, with 175 spaces, intended for short-stay users and, coming soon, for advance reservation services.
- P2 Preferente, with 301 spaces, is intended for short-term users and includes a dedicated area for driver-operated transport vehicles with 74 spaces.
- P3A Standard, with 526 spaces, which includes short-term parking spaces and spaces designated for car rental companies. Forty-two of its spaces are reserved for people with reduced mobility.
- P3B Económico, with 701 spaces, is designed for longer stays and rail season ticket holders.
- P3B Cuña, with 130 spaces, is designated for activities complementary to mobility, such as car rental services, fleet preparation, and electric vehicle charging stations.
