Banksy is once again at the center of the conversation. This time, not because of a new piece on just any wall on the planet, but because of a Reuters investigation that, after years of following leads, once again points to an identity: Robin Gunningham, a British man from Bristol who had already been linked to the artist nearly two decades ago.
According to this new report, Gunningham allegedly continued to operate under another name: David Jones, a name he adopted because it is one of the most common in the United Kingdom, while his inner circle, including Robert Del Naja (a member of Massive Attack), allegedly acted as support behind the scenes. The evidence comes from an old New York police report in which someone arrested for vandalism signed his name precisely as Robin Gunningham.
Although this isn’t the first time a name has been put on the table, what’s interesting about this investigation isn’t so much the confirmation as the effect it generates: Banksy has always played at being there and not being there, at signing without signing, at making his anonymity an essential part of his work.

Where to see Banksy’s world in Madrid

Seeing a Banksy piece is easy. Many are on walls in cities like London, Bristol, or New York; others have disappeared over time; and some are in virtually inaccessible places, such as the West Bank wall or damaged buildings in Ukraine. And now that a name and face are once again being attached to the artist, that contrast becomes even more evident: one can guess who is behind it, but his work remains difficult to see.
For this reason, the exhibition in Madrid takes a different approach: bringing together more than 170 life-size recreations that allow visitors to explore his imagination without relying on chance or travel. They are not original pieces, but faithful reconstructions that place each work in its context and allow them to be understood as a whole— something difficult when they are scattered across half the world.
