The Sala Alcalá 31 reopens on February 19 with a new free exhibition. Secundino Hernández in works is dedicated to the almost 30-year career of this painter from Madrid. This will be the first institutional exhibition in his hometown and will be open until April 20.
Secundino Hernández is known for his reflexive and experimental approach. His work combines influences as diverse as the great Spanish masters (Velázquez, Goya) and the avant-garde of the 20th century (Miró, Picabia). In addition, he uses innovative techniques such as the use of hydrolimpiadoras – a machine for cleaning surfaces – to “sculpt” layers of paint, reflecting his constant search for new visual languages. His works are part of important international collections such as the Rubell Family Collection in Miami or the Museo Jumex in Mexico.
A tour through the work of Secundino Hernández
The exhibition brings together nearly 70 works, from his first pieces in 1996 to a monumental polyptych of more than nine meters, created in 2025, which welcomes visitors. The tour does not follow a chronological order, but is organized in four thematic sections that explore the artist’s main concerns: drawing as the basis of painting, the treatment of surfaces as plastic space, form in pictorial composition and the use of the human figure, an unusual incursion in his predominantly abstract work.
The exhibition is a good opportunity to enter the creative universe of an artist whose work oscillates between the gestural and the meticulous, defying labels and exploring the limits of contemporary art.
