In December 1984 a film that would revolutionize fantasy cinema was released in Spain. The Neverending Story, directed by Wolfgang Petersen, would remain since then in the collective imagination of several generations and has become part of popular culture. In Madrid it could even be seen, for a time, in the form of a musical at the Teatro Calderón. Now, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of its premiere, an exhibition brings The Neverending Story back to the capital.
It is the Centro de Arte Tomás y Valiente de Fuenlabrada (CEART)( Calle Leganés, 51) the space that hosts, from October 25 until February 2, 2025, this completely free exhibition in Room A1 under the title The Neverending Story according to Colin Arthur.
Arthur was the creator of the special effects and the unforgettable creatures that star in this story. In the exhibition, curated by Víctor Matellano -who encouraged from his X profile to “Don’t miss it! Original pieces!”- the public will be able to meet again some of his favorite characters -such as Fújur, the dragon that has conquered generations of spectators, Gmork or the Stone Eater- through sculptures and reproductions.
Special activities around the exhibition
In addition to the exhibition itself, some parallel activities have been organized around it. On the one hand, on November 22 at 7 pm Colin Arthur and Víctor Matellano will give a special conference where “they will talk about the creatures and special effects that marked their careers”, according to the center, and the public will be able to learn some of the behind-the-scenes secrets of big productions.
On the other hand, and as the culmination of this tribute to a story as endless as timeless, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of its premiere in Spain, on December 6 at 6 pm the film will be screened at the Tomás y Valiente Theater. Admission is free until full capacity is reached.
