Madrid dawned with a cool breeze and the streets already full of people, but with a small relief before the return to routine: free travel on EMT municipal buses and the public electric bicycle service BiciMAD during several key days of September 2025.
The capital city is once again encouraging sustainable mobility and supporting public transport users with this initiative. More than 13 million people have already benefited since these free days began in previous editions, consolidating the success of the measure in the capital and its metropolitan area.
From September 1, 8 and 9, all trips on regular EMT lines will be completely free 24 hours a day (from 00:00 to 23:59 h), except on the express line that connects to the airport. Passengers only have to validate their regular card or, in case they do not have one, request a free ticket directly to the driver.
At the same time, journeys of up to 30 minutes on BiciMAD will also be free during these three days throughout the network, which consists of 630 stations and 7,735 bicycles distributed throughout the 21 districts of the city.
Free public transport for a few days in Madrid

The days, which coincide with the return to work and the start of the school calendar, seek to reduce private traffic congestion, promote fast and sustainable travel and facilitate mobility especially in a period of high demand after the summer.
This has been highlighted by the Urbanism, Environment and Mobility Area of the City Council, which recalls that only on the previous day of free BiciMAD (April 2025) more than 39,400 users benefited from the measure. The EMT network transported nearly 476 million passengers in 2024 and the growing demand demonstrates the usefulness of this type of campaign to change habits and reduce urban pollution.
These measures, already common in Madrid on key dates, continue to be an incentive for the use of public transport, with a direct impact on reducing traffic jams and improving air quality in the capital, which in recent weeks has been at red levels for pollution and sand.
