Madrid is preparing for a weekend of cold weather and snow in some areas. The AEMET is maintaining the yellow warning for snowfall in the Sierra, with accumulations of up to 5 centimeters in 24 hours and a level that will drop to 1,000-1,200 meters. It will be time to enjoy the snow at high altitudes… and to take extreme caution on the roads if your plans include going up into the mountains.
The Directorate-General for Civil Protection of the Community of Madrid has also activated the yellow level in response to the forecast, with a particular focus on the Somosierra area.
The episode will begin this Thursday, January 15, at 6:00 p.m. and will last at least until midnight, followed by new fronts that will continue to bring cold, wind, and precipitation over the weekend. Although this is a yellow alert (low risk for the general population), it may cause occasional problems for mountain activities and travel on the roads.
What weather is expected in the Community

AEMET forecasts point to a clear change in the weather pattern: skies will go from partly cloudy to overcast, with showers that will gain intensity and a snow level set at around 1,200 meters, dropping locally to 1,000 meters during the coldest hours. Minimum temperatures will hardly vary in the mountains, while maximum temperatures will drop, leaving light frosts at high altitudes and winter conditions throughout the interior of the region.
In Madrid city and the rest of the plateau, no snow is expected, but there will be rain, wind, and a drop in temperature that will keep the highs around 8-11ºC and the lows around 3ºC, typical values for a cold January. The wind chill will be even lower due to the southwesterly wind, so it is advisable to wrap up warm if your weekend plans include outdoor activities.
