In order to reduce waiting times on the platform and increase the capacity of passengers per hour on Metro line 6, the Community of Madrid announced last July that there will be automated trains in 2027. The new trains will operate without a driver, something never seen before in the capital. The transformation of the gray line will include automatic platform doors and a renewed signaling system.
The installation of automatic doors is intended to increase the speed at which passengers enter the trains, as well as ensure the safety of users and workers. They will have anti-trapping elements, protection bars and other structures with anti-vandalism components. In addition, they will have serigraphs and LED screens with useful information for passengers.
Metro de Madrid will be responsible for coordinating the installation of the new doors, in addition to other projects that will help to fully automate Line 6, such as the arrival of the 40 driverless trains that the Community has required, or the refurbishment of the base on which the tracks are located.
In total, the Community of Madrid has invested 187 million euros in the automatic platform doors. Their installation will begin in the summer of 2025, coinciding with renovation works that are planned in the Circular for next year. First, the arch between the Moncloa to Méndez Álvaro stations will be remodeled from June to September. Then, from September to December, the section between Moncloa and Legazpi.
