Madrid, with its nearly 4 million residents and thousands of attractions, may not seem like the best place to grow old, but for those who hold on to their lifelong neighborhoods in the face of the capital’s constant changes, there are some advantages. Many older residents of Madrid can access discounts on cultural activities, workshops, sports, shops, and municipal services with a free card that isn’t always well known: madridmayor.
The card is primarily intended for people aged 65 and older who are registered residents of Madrid, but pensioners between the ages of 60 and 64 may also apply for it, and, under certain conditions, their spouses or domestic partners.
What is the madridmayor card?
The madridmayor card is free and allows the cardholder to become a member of one of the Municipal Senior Centers corresponding to their address. Madrid has 93 such centers, spread across the various districts, where social, cultural, educational, sports, and recreational activities take place.
In addition to the programs organized at the centers, the card provides access to products and services with special benefits. Cardholders can find discounts at stores, health and wellness facilities, cultural venues, sports activities, and other services participating in the program.
The specific offerings vary by district and each season’s schedule, but may include dance, tai chi, theater, painting, computer classes, adapted exercise, memory activities, crafts, music, reading, and intergenerational programs.
Municipal centers also serve as gathering places. In addition to scheduled activities, they may offer services such as a café, hair salon, or podiatry clinic at special rates. According to City Hall, the goal is to promote an active lifestyle, foster relationships among neighbors, and provide resources for leisure, health, and community involvement close to home.
Registration for activities is not always automatic just because you have the card. Some programs have limited capacity, enrollment periods, or specific criteria, so it’s advisable to check directly with the relevant municipal center to find out which courses are open, which have waiting lists, and which are free or offer reduced fees.
Who can apply for the madridmayor card
The madridmayor card can be requested free of charge if you meet any of the following requirements:
- Be 65 years of age or older and registered as a resident of the municipality of Madrid.
- Be a pensioner between the ages of 60 and 64.
- Being the spouse or domestic partner of a cardholder, even if they do not personally meet the age or pension requirement, provided the relationship can be verified.
Residency must be registered in the city of Madrid, not in any other municipality within the Community, which have their own senior programs.
How to Apply
The application can be submitted online through the Madrid City Council’s electronic portal or in person at the Línea Madrid Citizen Service Offices. There is no fee for processing the application.
To apply in person, an appointment is usually not required at the Línea Madrid offices, although there are exceptions, and it is advisable to check before going. The branch offices in Aravaca, El Pardo, and Valverde require an appointment.
The required documentation may vary depending on the applicant’s situation, but it is usually necessary to provide personal identification and, when applicable, documentation proving pensioner status or a relationship with the cardholder. The City Council may verify some of the registration information on its own initiative, although it is advisable to review the application process before submitting the request.
