The Community of Madrid has decided to increase funding for birth-related benefits and raise the maximum amount a young mother can receive per child—combining regional benefits and the covered period—to 14,500 euros. It is doing so, moreover, after recording the highest birth rate growth in all of Spain, with a 3.3% increase in 2025 compared to the national average of 1%.
The regional government has approved a budget increase that raises the amount allocated in 2026 for pregnancy, birth, and adoption assistance to 125.5 million euros. Only the monthly benefit for mothers under 30 is being increased by an additional 4.5–5.3 million euros compared to the initial plan.
The flagship benefit is the regional allowance of 500 euros per month per child, starting from approximately the middle of the pregnancy until the child turns two. The region has gradually extended the coverage period to 29 months (from the 21st week of pregnancy until the month the child turns 24 months), resulting in up to 14,500 euros per child if the full amount is received. The benefit also applies in cases of adoption, with the amount multiplied for each child.
In addition to this regional benefit, there is municipal aid from the Madrid City Council (one-time payments of 500 euros for the first child, 750 for the second, and 1,000 for the third or subsequent children), which is compatible with the regional aid and has its own budget of 17.3 million euros for its first round of applications. The practical result, for a family that meets the requirements and resides in the capital, is a financial package that, in some cases, easily exceeds those 14,500 euros over the first years of the child’s life.
Who is eligible for this assistance?
The substantial regional benefit of 500 euros per month is aimed at young mothers with limited resources. The general requirements include:
- Be 30 years old or younger at the time of application.
- Legal residence in Spain and continuous registration in the Community of Madrid for a minimum period (typically, at least 10 years, continuous or discontinuous, or 5 immediately preceding years, depending on previous calls for applications).
- Income limits: must not exceed approximately 30,000 euros annually for individual tax returns or 36,200 euros for joint returns, according to current regulations.
The benefit can be applied for starting in the 21st week of pregnancy or after birth/adoption, and is paid monthly as long as the conditions are met, up to the child’s age limit.
At the same time, the Madrid City Council grants its one-time payments for birth or adoption with no income or age limits, provided that the parents are registered residents of the city and the baby was born or adopted between June 1, 2025, and August 31, 2026 (dates that will be updated in future calls for applications).
