The sight of a landscape illuminated by thousands of golden glimmers floating on the water’s surface seems reserved for the iconic festivals of Chiang Mai, Thailand. However, this September, this well-known Asian tradition will cross borders to arrive in Madrid. On September 18 and 19, Juan Carlos I Park will host the Water Lantern Festival, an outdoor event offering a unique evening in a peaceful and deeply evocative atmosphere. Tickets are now on sale.

An evening of reflection and community
The festival’s concept revolves around a highly visual and participatory ritual. Each attendee will receive a floating lantern that they can personalize with a drawing, a memory, a message of gratitude, or a wish for the future. The lanterns are made from 100% sustainable materials, using biodegradable rice paper and wooden bases. Instead of real fire, LED candles are used for lighting, and at the end of the event, all lanterns and other waste are removed, ensuring the venue is restored to its original condition.

After an afternoon of music and socializing, the highlight of the evening takes place at sunset: all participants simultaneously release their lanterns onto the water. The result is a luminous scene that invites you to pause, reflect, and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings in the company of family or friends, creating a moment of collective connection.
Cuisine and live music
Beyond the visual spectacle, the festival is designed as a complete experience to be enjoyed to the fullest, without rushing. During the Water Lantern Festival, the atmosphere will be enlivened by relaxing music and live performances at various times throughout the evening.
There will also be a food court featuring food trucks, offering crowd-pleasing classics like burgers and pizza, complemented by a variety of other options to suit different tastes.
