The most important dates of Christmas are just around the corner and many households are preparing for the traditional Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve or Christmas Day meals. Although good organization is key, last-minute purchases and forgetfulness are very common.
For this reason, it is advisable to know the opening times of the different supermarkets and their opening hours, avoiding unnecessary trips and crowds. Most establishments reduce their opening hours on the 24th and 31st, while on the 25th they remain closed, although each store has its own peculiarities.
Early closures at Mercadona and Lidl.
On both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, Mercadona will open its doors at 9:00 am and close them at 7:00 pm. This is a measure adopted throughout Spain, as announced by the chain. For its part, on December 25 and January 6 it will remain completely closed, as they are national holidays.
In general terms, Lidl will follow the same timetable as Mercadona, closing at around 19:00 hours on the 24th and 31st. However, it is advisable to consult each store on its website, as some establishments may have their own timetable.
Only open for half a day
In the case of Aldi, the reduced opening hours mean opening only in the morning, until 15:00, which will be followed for both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. National holidays, December 25 and January 1 and 6 will also not open all day.
On the day of the famous parade, January 5, it will be important to review the schedules, as some stores will keep the reduced and others will open normally.
Carrefour and Alcampo
On December 25, both Alcampo and Carrefour will remain closed, so it will be a day where it will be difficult to shop in supermarkets. On the eve of the holidays, the 24th and 31st, they will keep reduced opening hours in most of their stores. In many cases they will share the closing time with Lidl and Mercadona, at 19:00 hours.
However, it is advisable to consult each store on the Alcampo and Carrefour websites. For example, in the case of Carrefour, some of its express stores do make an exception and open during the holiday, offering an option to those desperate to buy that day.
