A street survey in downtown Madrid reveals which toys passersby most wanted but never received during their childhood. The respondents’ answers range from classic skill-based games to interactive robots, confirming that the memory of those unfulfilled wishes remains vivid years later.
From the Tooth-Pulling Crocodile to the robot Emilio
Among the items mentioned by passersby, the “Tooth-Pulling Crocodile” stands out. One of the young women interviewed recalls that she constantly asked her parents for it, but assumes they never bought it for her because they thought the game of pulling the reptile’s teeth out was “nonsense.”
Another respondent expresses frustration at not having received the Emilio robot, recalling the popular TV commercial in which the android served drinks to a child relaxing on a lounge chair by the pool. “I’ve always wanted that robot,” the young man says of the electronic butler.
The Refrigerator, an Intercontinental Wish
The Famoplay Ice Cream Maker also holds a special place in the memories of those surveyed. One of them explains that she wanted it so badly as a child that, to make up for not having had it, she recently asked for a real machine for her birthday so she could make her own ice cream and eat it.
This phenomenon of advertised but unattainable products crosses borders. A young Latin American woman explains that in her region, commercials were constantly aired for an ice cream-making toy that wasn’t distributed in her country. “All of Latin America wanted that toy, and no one ever got it because they didn’t sell it,” she says, describing the situation as the “unfulfilled dream” of an entire generation that watched the TV commercials without any real chance of acquiring the item.
