At a Madrid spot that describes itself as Málaga’s embassy in the capital, more than 50 varieties of the traditional “campero” sandwich are served. The restaurant offers this signature southern sandwich at reasonable prices, with options ranging from the classic ham and cheese to vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, lactose-free, and even sweet versions. In addition to food, the restaurant offers beer starting at 60 cents.
The basis for all the sandwiches is the Antequera mollete. As the owner explains, the bread is received unbaked, filled with various combinations—such as the owner’s favorite, which features Brie cheese and caramelized onions, or the classic with tomato, lettuce, egg, and ham—and then grilled. The result is a sandwich with a light crumb that’s crispy on the outside and warm on the inside. Prices are tailored to the local clientele, which is predominantly student-oriented: the small size costs 3 euros and the large, 6 euros. The quality of their signature item earned them an award two years ago at the Copa del Mejor Campero.
Fair-season products and support for local sports
Beyond the “camperos,” the shop serves as a small haven for Málaga’s culinary traditions. On its shelves and in its display cases, you can find Cartojal wine—a staple at the Málaga Fair—and the traditional “tortas locas,” which are sold for one euro. The shop’s decor, a far cry from large chain stores, includes references to the Andalusian city and a refrigerator covered in magnets brought in by employees and customers.
Catalin recounts that the early days weren’t easy, since a decade ago in Madrid the term “campero” was often associated with chicken or eggs. After working as a kitchen assistant and waiter, he gradually saved up month after month to buy the equipment for his own restaurant. Today, the business maintains strong ties to its community. Since 2016, El Campero has sponsored the SPV Complutense hockey team, and it currently supports the Los Gambrinus basketball team.
The walls of the small restaurant display trophies, an award-winning helmet, and jerseys signed by the players, cementing it as a place where the original customers, ten years later, continue to visit with their families.
