Mejorada del Campo takes another step toward its rail connection with Madrid. The Ministry of Transportation and Sustainable Mobility has authorized the call for bids for the feasibility study to extend the commuter rail network from San Fernando de Henares to the municipality. “Green light for the preliminary study to extend the Madrid Commuter Rail network to Mejorada del Campo,” announced Minister Óscar Puente, who estimates the planned investment at 100 million euros to build a new station and connect it to the existing network. The project is included in the Madrid Commuter Rail Plan.
The stated goal is to achieve a frequency of up to six trains per hour and a ridership of approximately 8,000 passengers per day. The connection would represent a significant change for residents: currently, Mejorada del Campo has no direct access to either the Cercanías or the Metro and relies on the intercity bus to reach these transit networks. As the City Council has noted, the preliminary feasibility studies launched last year yielded favorable results, which has allowed progress to be made toward this new phase.
The authorization does not yet mean that construction will begin, nor does it set a date for when trains will arrive: the feasibility study must define the characteristics and route of the future extension before the process can continue. Furthermore, this is a different project from the July 16 announcement by the Department of Transportation that you provided, which referred to the request for proposals for the study to extend Line C-4a from Alcobendas/San Sebastián de los Reyes to the Infanta Sofía Hospital. Both projects aim to expand the commuter rail network, but they involve different connections.
