With the smell of chlorine from the pools still on our skin and just a few weeks left in the school year, Madrid now has the 2026/2027 school calendar in black and white.
The dates that will shape the lives of thousands of families will begin between September 7 and 9, depending on the grade level, and will end around June 18, 2027, for most students. From there, each school will add national, regional, and local holidays to complete the puzzle of school days, vacations, and long weekends for the new school year.
When do classes start in Madrid
The resolution from the Regional Ministry of Education, Science, and Universities thus sets the start of the school year for students as follows:
- Preschools, daycare centers, early childhood education programs in public schools, and publicly funded private preschools:September 7, 2026.
- Second cycle of Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, and Special Education:September 7, 2026.
- Integrated Centers for Music Arts Education and Elementary Education:September 7, 2026.
- Secondary Education, High School, and Vocational Training:September 8, 2026.
- Integrated Music and Secondary Education Centers:September 8, 2026.
- Professional Conservatories of Music and Dance:September 8, 2026.
- Official Language Schools:September 8, 2026.
- Art Schools (2nd year of Visual Arts and Design programs):September 9, 2026.
- Higher Arts Education:September 9, 2026.
- Adult Education (CEPA):September 21, 2026.
- Art Schools (1st year of Visual Arts and Design programs):September 21, 2026.
When do classes end and summer begin?

The end of the school year also varies by level of education, but most students will finish classes in the second half of June:
- Preschools, daycare centers, early childhood education (first cycle), and private preschools with public funding:July 30, 2027.
- The rest: June 18, 2027, except for 12th grade, which will end depending on the EBAU and university admission processes.
- Official Language Schools:June 25, 2027.
In practice, this means that most schools and high schools in Madrid will have their last school day on Friday, June 18, and that preschools will remain open until July 30.
Vacations, holidays, and non-school days
The monthly calendar table marks school days, holidays/vacations, other non-school days, assessments, and review periods in different colors, but the resolution itself notes that the following must be added to this schedule:
- Thelocal holidaysset by each city council and published in the BOCM for 2026 and 2027.
- Christmas: December 23, 2026, to January 7, 2027, which could be extended until the 11th depending on the school.
- The holidays determined by the Community of Madrid for 2027 and the non-transferable national holidays: October 12, November 2, and December 7 and 8, 2026.
In other words, the calendar you see now is the common basis for the entire region; each municipality and each school will then add its own local holidays and, in some cases, a school-specific non-school day (for example, to celebrate the patron saint), which charter schools may move within the “other non-school days” category upon approval by the school board and notification to the Regional Office.
In Madrid, you would need to add November 9, 2026, which is the feast day of Our Lady of La Almudena, and May 15, 2027, a holiday for Saint Isidore the Farmer.
