Supermarkets and big-box stores will be the target of a new consumer strike. On Wednesday, October 28, and Wednesday, November 4, the organizing groups are asking citizens to avoid shopping at these establishments and instead choose municipal markets, neighborhood stores, or local producers.
The initiative, spearheaded by FACUA, Justicia Alimentaria, and the Confederation of Tenants’ Unions, will culminate on November 11 with a general strike aimed at bringing all shopping to a standstill, both in brick-and-mortar stores and online.
What are the organizers demanding?
The protest aims to denounce the rising cost of living and demand measures to reduce rents and control the prices of essential goods, such as food, energy, and transportation.
The organizations are also calling for greater transparency regarding the profit margins of large retailers. Participation is voluntary, and the call to action does not require any establishment to close.
