Chamberí Square has completed its comprehensive renovation after a year of construction and an investment of 2.3 million euros, which has transformed the 4,110 m² of the space. Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida visited the completed project on Monday alongside Deputy Mayor Inma Sanz.
The work included a complete reorganization of the interior spaces, a total renovation of the paving, street furniture, lighting, and green areas, as well as specific interventions on the square’s distinctive features.
The previous fountain, which was more classical and decorative, has been replaced by a new one with a granite perimeter that also serves as a bench. The three bronze figures that were part of the original fountain have been preserved and moved to a nearby planter, next to the statue of actress Loreto Prado, which has also been relocated near the new fountain.
The bandstand has been moved from its original location to expand the available open space. The renovation has restored it while respecting its historic character.
The children’s play area has been divided into three distinct zones, each with different play equipment, designed to accommodate different age groups and surrounded by greenery.
Greener, more efficient, and fully accessible
The renovation includes the planting of 14 new trees and the addition of landscaped areas with shrubs that complement the existing trees. The lighting has been replaced with classic candelabras and Fernandino-style lanterns equipped with LED technology, which reduces power consumption and improves energy efficiency. The sewer and drainage systems have also been renovated.
The paving combines tiles and cobblestones in shades of gray and tan that recreate the look of the historic pavement. The street furniture— three-meter-long wooden benches and modular benches surrounding the planters—has been arranged so as not to obstruct accessible pathways.
