One way to measure the impact of a fictional series is through its enduring place in the collective memory and affection—both of which Aquí no hay quien viva (2003–2006) can still claim even two decades after its broadcast, which left a lasting impression on several generations of viewers. This is demonstrated by the never-ending debate over the supposed building in Madrid that inspired the series, or the fact that a prequel in the form of a stage play is set to premiere in 2026.
Waiting for Manolo: A Comedy Inspired by Aquí no hay quien viva is the title of this theatrical production coming to the capital courtesy of Brodwei—a company specializing in original musical parodies—and starring the inseparable and beloved trio of Marisa, Vicenta, and Concha, played respectively by actresses Mariví Bilbao, Gemma Cuervo, and Emma Penella.
The plot goes back to the moment when Marisa, after being abandoned by her husband Manolo, moves to number 21 on Desengaño Street to live with her sister Vicenta. It is there that they will meet Concha—a neighbor having an affair with the building’s doorman—and where viewers can return, for 75 minutes, to that world of entanglements and gossip that brought to life the most famous neighborhood community on our television.
Given that this comedy premieres on September 25, it’s too early to know if we’ll hear a “¡Movida, movida!” “¡Soy Concha, entro!” or “¡Qué mona va esta chica siempre!”, but what is certain is that this unforgettable trio will reunite for a few days on the stage of Madrid’s Teatro Luchana. And perhaps, from some nearby courtyard with good acoustics, those who brought them to life are listening.
