As we approach the final stretch of August, the classic nostalgia for the end of summer vacation begins to rear its head. However, there’s one date on the calendar that transforms that summer melancholy into collective excitement: September 1. This is the day when, traditionally, young witches and wizards cross Platform 9¾ to board the train that will take them back to Hogwarts™.
Madrid is joining the Back to Hogwarts festivities by gearing up for one of the most impressive immersive shows of the coming months: a display of 1,200 drones that will project scenes from the Harry Potter™ movies into the sky. The event will take place at the Hipódromo de la Zarzuela on the evenings of September 16 and 18, and October 1, 2, and 3. A special date for true fans of the Harry Potter™ movies
“Back to Hogwarts” has become a tradition that transcends the screen. Every September 1, cities around the world are filled with nods to the franchise. In Madrid, fans typically organize movie marathons, wear scarves despite the lingering summer heat, or gather at themed venues throughout the capital to share their passion.
And although Back to Hogwarts culminates on that first day of September, the excitement for the magical world usually carries on for the following weeks, encouraging Madrid residents to seek out all kinds of activities that keep the spirit of Harry Potter™ alive.
1,200 drones and Harry Potter™ in the Madrid night sky
With the arrival of fall, the new edition of the DroneArt Show will land in the capital. 1,200 drones will take the place of the stars to recreate, in great detail, some scenes from the Harry Potter™ movies: from the appearance of the endearing Dobby to the excitement of a Quidditch™ match .
In addition, the show is designed to blur the line between the audience and the sky. Attendees will receive LED wristbands that will light up in unison, displaying—among other things—the colors of the four Hogwarts™ houses during the most special moments. All of this will be accompanied by an electric violinist who will perform live excerpts from the original soundtrack.
The Hipódromo de la Zarzuela will open its doors two hours before the show begins, inviting us to enjoy the outdoor atmosphere, stroll through the “ ” merchandise area (full of wands and collectibles), or grab a bite to eat at the food trucks—just before magic takes over the Madrid sky for a few moments.
