According to the latest Household Budget Survey, Madrileños spend 14.01% of their salary on shopping. Although the percentage is below the spanish average (16.35%) is the highest figure recorded in the Community of Madrid in the last ten years. Fortunately, there are new models of low-cost supermarkets that allow you to save a lot of money with their offers, such as La Trastienda (Parla) or Family Cash (Alcalá de Henares). This last supermarket has achieved the recognition of the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) for being the second with the most affordable fresh food in the country and the cheapest in Madrid.
History of Family Cash
The first Family Cash was inaugurated in Xàtiva, a coastal town in the Valencian Community. Its success led to the opening of more locations like this one in other nearby municipalities: Torrent, L’Alquería, Ontinyent and Museros. 11 years after the first opening, the supermarket chain has 40 stores throughout Spain. In Madrid, it only has one in the Quadernillos Shopping Center (avda. Don Juan Tenorio, s/n), with a surface area of 3,400 meters and free parking.
A tempting catalog
In the Family Cash catalog we find offers such as meat packs for €3.99, pizzas for €2.49, seafood preparations for €6.99 and, most surprising of all: bananas, pineapples, nectarines, tomatoes and more fresh produce for €0.99 per kilo. Something difficult to see in Sanchez Romero, Coaliment or Amazon, which are on the list of the most expensive supermarkets in Spain.
More cheap supermarkets according to the OCU
According to the latest report of the Consumer Organization, Family Cash is the fifth cheapest supermarket in Spain. The first place goes to Dani, a chain that has not yet arrived in Madrid. It only has stores in Granada, Malaga, Jaen and Almeria. No major supermarket chain (Carrefour, Dia, Ahorra Más) appear on the list of the most affordable according to the OCU, except Alcampo, in seventh place.
