The capital is full of archaeological remains of the Civil War: Miaja’s bunker in El Capricho and the forts of the Casa de Campo, among other constructions, remind us of a bloody past that marked a before and after in the history of Spain.
To discover all the secrets of the three years of combat, still present today in political speeches, the Madrid Front Studies Group (GEFREMA) organizes tours of the heritage preserved from that turbulent period.
At the moment, the association has confirmed seven routes for February. Those interested in going are advised to reserve a place six days in advance through the GEFREMA website. The price of each tour for the general public is €12 (to be paid upon arrival at the meeting point).
The three best historical routes of GEFREMA
The route of the poets in Moncloa
Literature lovers can’t miss the route of the poets, which will take you on a tour of the neighborhoods frequented by part of the Generation of ’27. The houses of Vicente Aleixandre, Miguel Hernández and Pablo Neruda are essential points of the tour.
📅 Date: Sunday, February 9 (reservations from Monday, February 3)
Tour of the old Carabanchel front.
The Carabanchel route describes the war events of the district in the place where they happened: the Escolapias, the Colonia de la Prensa, the Príncipe de Asturias and Santa Rita reformatories, the Colegio de Ciegos, the Plaza de Toros and the Nuestra Señora de la Antigua hermitage are among the places on the tour.
📅 Date: Saturday, February 8 (reservations from Monday 3)
Journey to the past in Casa de Campo
Casa de Campo played a key role in the capture of Madrid: the rebel army occupied three quarters of the park in November 1936, and the war front was established there. For this reason, GEFREMA has planned a route through the key points of the site during the conflict.
