A few months ago, a question became popular on the Internet – are you able to land a plane? – aimed at a male audience. The answer used to be a resounding yes: a yes with no empirical basis. The question could be rephrased and oriented to the railway field: Are you able to start or stop a train? And the answer would or could have, at least in Madrid, an empirical basis.
The Railway Museum opened in July this summer a room called Renfe-Simulators. Its function is almost self-explanatory: levers and a screen simulate the experience (experience is a euphemism for work, in this case) of driving a train.
In fact, the machines used before were at the Renfe Training School: they are two cabins that were used to train train train drivers. They can be used to start, accelerate or brake. And they drive both conventional and high-speed lines.
Other options, prices and schedules
And if driving is not enough or is considered an emotion of high responsibility, the CIMAF garden offers for the youngest the possibility of being a passenger on a mini-train. From 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., a small real train of reduced dimensions (12.7 cm wide) travels around a circuit.
Visits to the new museum hall are included in the entrance ticket to the Railway Museum, which costs 7 € for the general public and 4 € for students, children between 4 and 12 years, over 65 and members of the associations of Friends of the Railway.
