The weight of a Boeing 757-200 with fuel, passengers and cargo; that of an adult blue whale or that of an ultra-heavy mining truck. That is the amount in kilos that Morata de Tajuña sells of its star product. Every year, this town that has in the chocolate palmeritas its goose that lays the golden eggs, Morata sells 95,000 kilos.
And two of the days when it sells the most is the second weekend of December. That is when the sixth edition of the Palmerita Fair of Morata is held. This year, as Madrid Secreto has learned, it will be held on December 14 and 15.
As in previous years, the Plaza Mayor will be the epicenter of the celebration and in this place the Morata pastry shops will be installed. The program is not yet confirmed, but the dynamics of previous years points to draw which could be the participating bakeries. In other editions De La Torre, Paco-Pan, La Dulcería, La Real, la Panificadora Morateña, Conejo and El Carmen have participated.
Morata, which is almost synonymous with palmerita, receives every year about 20,000 visitors during that weekend. According to council sources consulted by the newspaper El Mundo, last year they produced 8,200 kilos. About 150,000 palmeritas.
Where to buy chocolate palmeras in Madrid
Although the origin of the palmerita is not entirely clear, there are reasons to associate it with Madrid: the Madrid Confectioners Association recognizes it as a typical pastry and it is a must in the showcases of any pastry shop in the region.
In the city, jewels like La Duquesita ( Fernando VI, 2) stand out for their 70% bitter chocolate, while in Moulin Chocolat (Alcalá, 77) a creamy glaze triumphs. Places like Panod (several locations) or Cientotreinta Grados (Fernando el Católico, 17) bet on an impeccable puff pastry.
