The Teatro Real opens its 29th season since its reopening on September 19 with the revival of the production of Otello, by Giuseppe Verdi. The opera, which was one of the Italian composer’s last works, is based on the tragedy written by William Shakespeare and the stage version now presented in Madrid was premiered in 2016, in a co-production with the English National Opera and the Royal Opera of Stockholm.
To this start of the season is added the Opera Week, an event born with the intention of promoting, disseminating and celebrating the link between the Teatro Real and the city. Thus, the Madrid coliseum organizes various open and free activities, such as talks and lectures on the operatic universe, recitals by its most prominent artists, family workshops and live broadcasts designed for citizens to enjoy opera in urban spaces, as well as on digital platforms and television channels.
How to see Otello for free in Madrid
As part of the special Opera Week program, Madrid’s Plaza de Isabel II will host a free live screening of Giuseppe Verdi’s Otello on September 25, broadcast from the Teatro Real starting at 7:30 pm.

This initiative brings opera to all audiences and allows them to enjoy in the open air one of the great productions of the season, with international casts and musical direction by Nicola Luisotti. The projection will have a giant screen and high quality sound, turning the square into a large open theater in the heart of the city, in collaboration with Mezzo TV, Medici TV and the My Opera Player platform, where it will also be available for viewing. The event is part of the outreach activities and free access promoted by the Teatro Real to bring the lyrical art to all citizens.
