The Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid is celebrating because this year celebrates 270 years since its founding by Ferdinand VI and does so by opening its doors to all visitors with free access and an extraordinary cultural agenda from 13 to 19 October.
It is the opportunity to discover the most emblematic garden of Spain and enjoy proposals from cinema and outdoor theater to exhibitions, conferences and dramatized visits.
Program for the 270th anniversary of the Botanical Garden
The program starts with the photographic exhibition A walk through the Royal Botanical Garden in images, a visual tour through the history of the garden, its collections and the mark it has left on the city from the mid-nineteenth century to the seventies. In addition, there are lectures, such as the talk on botanical history by María Teresa Telleria, the first woman director of the Garden, and presentations of books on historical gardening.
The Cinema in the Garden series brings documentaries such as Homo Botanicus, which explores the passion of scientists for biodiversity, and theater is integrated into the guided and dramatized tours, where actors from Impromadrid stage the lives of key figures in the garden and its evolution.
On Friday, October 17, the highlight of the anniversary, admission will be free throughout the day: from 11:00 to 13:00, the garden staff will be available to interact, explain the scientific and heritage work of the Botanical Garden and share anecdotes with attendees. All programming is free, although for some activities it is necessary to reserve a place online.
On Saturday 18 there will be a dramatized visit The Garden on stage: theater for the 270th anniversary of the RJB-CSIC, which will cover the history of the space through some of the most iconic characters of the Garden, such as Villanueva, Boutelou or Paunero.
This festive week culminates on Sunday, October 19 with guided tours of the photographic exhibition A walk through the Royal Botanic Garden in images is a tribute not only to 270 years of natural and scientific history, but to all the people-gardeners, researchers, teachers and citizens-who have made the Royal Botanic Garden a reference of living heritage, culture and discovery in Madrid.
