This coming May, the city of Getafe will transform into a Grand Prix during its patron saint festivities. This is a new initiative launched by the City Council to celebrate“Peñas Day,”a time for gathering and competition among different local groups.
The event will take place on Sunday, May 24, at Ciudad de los Niños Park, a green space with ample shade and room to hold the competitions. In addition, the different groups will be able to spread out across the grounds to eat and spend the day.
This tournament is part of the Getafe festival program, which runs from May 14 to 31 and will feature all kinds of cultural and community activities, as well as, of course, top-tier concerts by artists such as David Bustamante, Kiko Veneno, and Sidonie.
Seven events and up to 20 clubs

As Getafe Mayor Sara Hernández explained, the goal of this day is“to reinforce the participatory model of wholesome fun among the local clubs.” The activity has already been successful in other neighborhoods within the city, and this is an opportunity to expand it.
In total, participants will face seven different challenges, such as inflatable obstacles , water games, and games of skill, reminiscent of the challenges on the famous TV game show, the Summer Grand Prix. They will be distributed throughout the park, always respecting the natural environment, andkeeping the children’s area reserved so as not to disrupt the play area for the little ones.
Requirements to compete

Clubs wishing to compete must register on the Getafe website in the coming days. As explained by the City Council, the requirements are to have between 20 and 100 members, with at least two-thirds of them being local residents. Furthermore, at least one-third of the members must be of legal age to ensure supervision of the children.
Each team will wear an identifying T-shirt, which will allow them to represent their club and strengthen the bond among them. They have also been asked to gather on the day of the Opening Ceremony at Getafe’s Plaza de la Constitución to fill it with color and a festive atmosphere.
