Usera, Madrid’s famous Chinatown, further reinforces its identity with a new promenade that includes a Chinese horoscope, carp engravings, quotes from celebrities such as Bruce Lee, and even a park with a giant dragon.
The walk is part of the redevelopment of Chinatown, with the aim of integrating the Chinese community with the rest of the capital. To this end, it covers 1.5 kilometers connecting Madrid Río with Plaza del Hidrógeno, located in the heart of Usera.
Immersion in Chinese culture

This new itinerary allows Madrid residents and tourists to immerse themselves completely in Chinese culture. Engravings of Chinese carp, symbolizing perseverance and overcoming adversity, have been installed on the ground .
In addition, six famous quotes from Asian culture have been included, with the text also translated into Spanish. Among them is one from actor and philosopher Bruce Lee: “Be like the virtue of water, my friend! (It adapts, flows, and overcomes).”
But the most striking feature is undoubtedly a large red dragon, located in the park in Plaza de las Tizas. With this renovation, the space dedicates more than 285 m² to children’s play, with elements such as slides, swings, climbing walls, and trampolines.
Sustainability with Asian plants

The new project has affected a total of 19 streets and expanded the pedestrian area to 39,000 square meters, according to Madrid City Council. And to increase shaded areas and green spaces, 290 new trees and more than 11,200 plants have been planted.
Of particular note is the inclusion of several Chinese species, selected for their compatibility with Madrid’s climate. In this way, they reinforce the coexistence of both cultures and the city’s commitment to sustainability.
A 500-kilogram panda bear

To complete the new Chinatown, a marble panda bear statue has been placed on Dolores Barranco Street. It is very striking because it is one meter tall and weighs 500 kilos.
The idea is to accompany it with two large oriental arches that will mark the entrance and exit to Chinatown, but this has not yet been possible. Installation work will begin next week, according to Madrid Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida during his visit to the new promenade yesterday.
