Jacinto Benavente Square is probably one of the least popular squares in the city of Madrid: with a layout that turns getting around into a sort of open-air escape room, it required a renovation that is currently underway and will transform both the square and its surrounding streets in time for next spring.
The project, with a budget of 9.5 million euros, not only covers more than 10,000 m² of the square but also affects the following surrounding streets: Carretas, la de la Bolsa, Atocha, the intersection with Concepción Jerónima Street, and Doctor Cortezo Street.
Among the most notable changes are the removal of one of the two bus bays, the creation of eight flower beds with vegetation, the expansion of the pedestrian area, and the installation of a large pergola.
Another key aspect of the construction work at Jacinto Benavente Square is the renovation of the underground parking garage’s structure, which the Madrid City Council acknowledges as obsolete. Once the work is complete, the only entrance to the parking garage will be from Doctor Cortezo.
This measure is expected to improve pedestrian safety and promote smooth traffic flow, eliminating the need for turns and potential wait times when entering the parking garage.
A new plaza with greenery, a pergola, and water features
One of the changes to the plaza’s landscape will be the addition of new flower beds with vegetation. As a result, the plaza will feature“an area of 3,105 m² dedicated exclusively to pedestrians and trees,”according to data from the Madrid City Council.
Furthermore, to “enhance” the space, a large pergola will be installed in the center, as a “reference to the old farmhouse that once dominated the square.” This pergola will also be equipped with misting systems to alleviate the heat during the summer months.
