“Every two weeks, an all-time classic at 10:30 p.m.” This is how the Verdi Cinemas in Madrid (Calle de Bravo Murillo, 28) are announcing their new series—Anime Day, in collaboration with SelectaVisión—in which every 15 days they will screen some of the most outstanding titles in this Japanese animation genre.
The film event will kick off on Friday, February 6, 2026, and the film chosen for the inaugural screening is Akira ( 1988) by Katsuhiro Ōtomo, which will be shown in Theater 1. The screening will be in the original version with Spanish subtitles.
The Verdi Cinemas refer to this series as a way of reinforcing “their commitment to auteur cinema, film culture, and collective experiences in the theater, betting on anime as a fundamental and timeless cinematic language.”
At the moment, the rest of the feature films that will make up Verdi’s Anime Day are not known, but according to the cinema, “the following titles that will be part of the series will be announced soon.”
A series for veterans and new generations
The series was created with the aim of becoming an essential event for lovers of Japanese animation, as well as highlighting “an exceptional catalog of iconic and cult titles,” in the words of its organizers.
The aim is to reach not only the most veteran fans of the genre, but also new generations who want to discover these works—both great classics and anime essentials— with the best possible projection quality.
Tickets for the anime series at the Verdi Cinemas
Tickets can be purchased on the cinema’s website or at the box office. The ticket price is €8.50, which is reduced to €7 if you have an Amigos del Verdi card.
Akira Comics, the store awarded the “Oscar” of comics
Alongside the screenings, a must-visit in Madrid for manga fans and comic book lovers is undoubtedly the store that shares its name with Ōtomo’s film: Akira Comics (Avenida de Betanzos, 74). This family-run comic book store has achieved what no other has: winning the Eisner Spirit of Comics award for best in the world twice, considered the “Oscars” of comics.
In addition to the quality of its catalog and the variety of activities it organizes, the visit is also worthwhile for its meticulous decoration and atmosphere, capable of transporting you to other worlds: exactly the same as when you immerse yourself in one of its comics.
