The Madrid City Council has begun collecting the 2026 garbage collection fee, which averages 164 euros per household—seven euros more than in 2025—according to estimates by Más Madrid. The amount varies depending on the property and the neighborhood: in Santa Eugenia, for example, the increase is around 40%, compared to 0.5% in Los Jerónimos, as reported by the online news outlet eldiario.es
When is the Madrid garbage tax due?
The payment period runs from October 1 to November 30, 2026. Property owners can view their bills in the Madrid City Council’s Tax Folder.
The 2025 fee was overturned by the Madrid High Court of Justice due to procedural flaws. However, the ruling is not yet final, as the City Council has appealed to the Supreme Court. The 2026 ordinance remains in effect.
How to appeal the 2026 garbage collection fee
Taxpayers who wish to file a claim have one month from the end of the voluntary payment period to file an appeal against the periodic bill.
The process can be completed through the Taxpayer Portal. The OCU has also published a downloadable appeal form to facilitate the process. Filing an appeal does not exempt you from paying the fee within the established deadline nor does it guarantee a refund.
