Young people in Madrid will have a new option for finding their first home. It is a new co-living facility with 49 studios and common areas, promoted by the city’s mayor, José Luis Martínez Almeida.
According to Álvaro González, the delegate for the Housing Department, as explained to Servimedia , it will be built on Calle Ofelia Nieto, in the Moncloa-Aravaca district, and construction will begin before the summer.
In total, the City Council will invest €6.5 million in the project, which will be dedicated to both Madrid residents and students who arrive in Madrid each year. It will be the first public co-living space in the capital, and wood materials will be used to reduce the environmental and economic impact of construction.
Saving on housing

With this initiative, the council aims to help young people reduce their fixed housing costs. According to Álvaro Gónzalez, they are very excited about the project and he believes that “it will turn out really well and open up an interesting path for young people.”
The Municipal Housing and Land Company (EMVS) will be responsible for managing the rent paid by users of the new co-living facility . The aim is to support young people, one of the groups most affected by the difficulties of accessing housing in Madrid.
In fact, according to the City Council, nearly 90% of the newly built homes raffled off by the EMVS are awarded to people under 35 or families with children, in pursuit of this same goal.
Wood and sustainability

An industrialized wood construction systemwill be used to build the new co-living complex, reducing construction time by up to 70%. It also reduces environmental impact and emissions by 40% compared to other systems such as brick or concrete.
Thanks to wood and cork, the homes will be more energy and acoustically efficient . Bioclimatic designs such as cross-ventilation systems will be implemented to improve thermal stability and reduce energy consumption.
In its commitment to more environmentally friendly construction, last January the Madrid City Council presented the Iberia Loreto 1 development, which focuses on the use of wood. Through this system, it plans to promote another 760 similar homes in districts such as Barajas, Villa de Vallecas, and Vicálvaro.
