Work on the so-called Paseo Verde del Suroeste continues, and this summer will mark an important step toward its completion: preliminary work will be carried out to connect the new tunnel that takes the A-5 underground with the M-30 underpass that crosses Avenida de Portugal. As a result, traffic will be affected by significant disruptions in August.
The disruptions will begin next Monday, August 3, and will last until the 24th, completely closing the A-5 exit tunnel in the direction of Badajoz, as traffic flow is incompatible with the work that needs to be carried out.
According to the Madrid City Council, this work consists of “demolishing the concrete slab on the exit ramp of the existing M-30 tunnel, adapting the detour, and installing 14 large beams.”
Regarding the duration of the closures, the Madrid City Council notes that“it has been kept as short as possible to minimize the impact on roadtraffic during the month with the lowest number of trips by private vehicle.”
Alternative Routes Due to Traffic Closures This Summer
The Madrid City Council recommends various alternative routes to avoid the area affected by the construction, as it will not be possible to travel from the M-30 toward the A-5 starting at the Casa de Campo exit, nor from the inner M-30 to the A-5 in the exit direction.
Long trips from Madrid to nearby towns
- To leave Madrid via the A-5 connection to the M-30 South, drivers can take the A-42 or Vía Lusitana and from there proceed to the M-40, or take the exit onto Calle del General Ricardos to reach Avenida de los Poblados.
- For vehicles coming from the north on the M-30, the recommended alternative route is via the connection to the A-6, which allows access to the M-40 and from there to the A-5 toward the exit near Cuatro Vientos.
Route alternatives for residents of the area or district
- From the M-30 North, take Exit 19A via Paseo del Marqués de Monistrol, Paseo de Extremadura, and Avenida de Portugal.
- From the Segovia Bridge, along Saavedra Fajardo, Pablo Casals, and Sepúlveda streets.
- From the Puerta de Toledo roundabout, via Paseo de Pontones, Puente de San Isidro, Vía Carpetana, and Calle del Concejal Francisco José Jiménez Martín.
When will the underground construction work be completed?
According to Madrid City Council projections, civil engineering work on the tunnel will be completed in September, at which point preparations will begin to develop the Paseo Verde del Suroeste.
Meanwhile, the new tunnel that will bury the highway is set to open by the end of the year. The city council notes that “since 1968, this highway has separated residents of the Lucero, Aluche, and Las Águilas neighborhoods in the Latina district from those of Campamento (Latina) and Casa de Campo (Moncloa-Aravaca).”
