Several areas of the Community of Madrid are on alert this Thursday due to high temperatures resulting from this summer’s second heat wave: the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a warning regarding the maximum temperatures expected to be reached in the region throughout the day.
The advisory is in effect during the middle of the day, between 1:00 p.m. and 8:59 p.m., when maximum temperatures are expected to reach 39°C with a probability of between 40% and 70%, according to the AEMET.
The areas of the Community of Madrid affected by this advisory are the Metropolitan Area, Henares-Madrid, South, Vegas, and West-Madrid. Specifically, the 39°C will “most likely be reached in the Henares Corridor area.”
At the same time, another advisory—in this case, a low-risk advisory— is in effect in the Sierra de Madrid for maximum temperatures during the same time period, with a forecast high of 36 ºC.
Temperatures approaching (or reaching) 40 °C
The AEMET forecast indicates that temperatures will reach a high of 36 degrees in municipalities such as Collado Villalba, 38 degrees in Madrid and Navalcarnero, 39°C in Getafe, and that in Aranjuez and Alcalá de Henares, thermometers will hit 40°C.
On Friday, the high temperatures will drop slightly
On Friday, the high temperatures will ease slightly, though they will remain significantly high in the Metropolitan area, the South, the Vegas region, the West, and the lower elevations of the Sierra.
In addition, occasional thunderstorms are expected “that could be accompanied, at times, by hail, ” and strong wind gusts associated with this storm activity cannot be ruled out.
