The Royal Botanical Garden-CSIC (Plaza de Murillo, 2) once again takes center stage this spring with the fleeting spectacle of tulip blooms, transforming, as it does every year, into a sort of “little Holland” in Madrid, bursting with color and featuring different varieties of these bulbous plants, among whose flowers visitors can stroll for just a few weeks a year.
According to forecasts by experts from the RJB-CSIC, most of the flowers are expected to bloom this week: “We have wonderful days ahead of us, and everything points to Holy Week being spectacular, ” they say.
Among the tulip varieties that can be seen in the garden are the white ones of the ‘Royal Virgin’ variety, located in the first rows of the main planting, and those of the ‘National Velvet’ and ‘Hugs and Kisses’ varieties.
To be able to enjoy this floral spectacle now, preparations in the garden begin months in advance: last December, staff from the RJB-CSIC Garden and Tree Unit planted no fewer than 23,000 tulip bulbs with the aim of bringing color to the start of spring.
Beyond tulips: daffodils, hyacinths, and narcissus
Although their blooming is the most eagerly awaited by the public, tulips are by no means the only bulbous plants on display in all their splendor these days in the garden: others such as daffodils, narcissus, and hyacinths also add splashes of color to the landscape during these first spring strolls.
