Mercadona has already launched its new supermarket model—known internally as Tienda 9—in Madrid. The format changes the usual layout of its stores, emphasizes self-service, expands the space dedicated to fresh produce, and centralizes preparation, cooking, and packaging in a single location.
The model will not remain a one-time trial: Mercadona plans to gradually replace its current stores between 2026 and 2033, with an announced investment of 3.7 billion euros. The chain expects to end 2026 with around 60 “Tienda 9” locations throughout Spain.
Where is the new Tienda 9?

The first supermarket of this model to open in Madrid was located at 7 Joaquín María López Street in the Chamberí neighborhood. This store has been joined by other new openings and renovations in the Community of Madrid, including a new Tienda 9 at 24 Tenerife Avenue in San Sebastián de los Reyes.
The opening in San Sebastián de losReyes has led to the closure of the previous store on Calle de los Ciruelos. According to the company, the old location no longer met the standards required for its current network. With this opening, the region now has four supermarkets operating under the new format.
Goodbye to Some Traditional Sections
The main difference with Tienda 9 lies in its organization. Instead of being structured into many independent sections—such as the fish counter, deli, meat counter, or prepared foods, among others— Mercadona now groups products and internal operations by process.
The most visible change for customers will be the greater emphasis on self-service. Mercadona is removing the traditional “ ” fish and deli counters to offer fish, prepared foods, and sliced products on trays.
This transformation may make everyday shopping faster, though it also marks the end of a familiar way of shopping for those who prefer to choose the cut, request an exact quantity, or receive recommendations from the counter staff.
The rollout began following a pilot test in Xirivella, Valencia, and will expand across Spain and Portugal over the next few years. The company aims to combine the opening of new supermarkets designed specifically for the Tienda 9 model with the gradual renovation or replacement of existing locations.
