As of tomorrow, July 1, 2025, Renfe Cercanías will launch a new system of monthly passes with a flat rate, which will allow any user to travel unlimitedly on the Cercanías network throughout Spain for only 20 euros per month.
This change will mean the end of the system of free passes that has been in force since 2022 and will mark a before and after in urban and metropolitan mobility in the country.
New types of Cercanías season tickets as of July 1
The new general season ticket, available to anyone, will cost 20 euros per month and will give unrestricted access to all Cercanías hubs, regardless of the city or autonomous community. In addition, Renfe has created a youth season ticket for people between 15 and 26 years old, which will have a reduced price of 10 euros per month, and a free children’s season ticket for children under 15 years old, with annual validity and nominative character. To use any of these passes, it will be essential to have a personalized Renfe&Tú card.
Along with these changes, Renfe will also apply new discounts on the Conventional Media Distancia network: 40% for the general public, 50% for young people and free of charge for children under 15 years of age. These conditions will be financed by direct subsidies, at least until December 31, 2025.
The system of free quarterly passes, which required a minimum of 16 trips per quarter, will cease to be available from today, June 30, 2025. As of tomorrow, all users will have to adapt to the new flat fare model.
In communities such as Madrid and Andalusia, additional measures will be maintained: for example, the Community of Madrid will continue to offer free passes for the over 65s, financed by the regional government.
Changes in the monthly transport pass of the Community of Madrid
On the other hand, tomorrow the conditions of the monthly transport pass of the Community of Madrid will also change. The extraordinary 60% bonus applied since September 2022 will be reduced to 40%, which will mean a generalized price increase, although prices will remain below the ordinary rate. The new approximate prices will be as follows:
Normal season ticket (26-64 years old):
- Zone A: 32,80 € (before 21,80 €)
- Zone B1: 38,20 € (before 25,40 €)
- Zone B2: 43,20 € (before 28,80 €)
- Zones B3, C1, C2: 49,20 € (previously 32,80 €)
- Zone E1: 66,30 € (before 44,20 €)
- Zone E2: 79,00 € (before 52,70 €)
- Youth Pass (15-26 years old): 10,00 € (before 8,00 €)
- 10-trip card (zone A): 7,30 € (before 6,10 €)
